2017 A.R.T. Artist Bill Lieb Juried into the Sculpt Siouxland Exhibition in Sioux City!

Bill Lieb, long-time Artisan Road Trip artist, recently had one of his public sculpture pieces juried into the Sculpt Siouxland exhibition in Sioux City. The exhibit is sponsored by an organization of community leaders in partnership with the Sioux City Art Center. The sculpture was installed June 8, 2017 at the corner of 4th Avenue and Pierce Street, about one block northwest of the Sioux City Art Center (shown in the distant background),  and will remain in place there for one year. 

The 10.5 foot tall abstract sculpture is titled "Bird #4" and is part of a series of five large public sculptures fabricated by the artist in the past two years. The triangular base is weathering steel, the two wing features above the base are stainless steel and the top spinner is aluminum. The piece is kinetic and is activated by the breeze to present curious bewildering movements to engage the viewer in playful conversation.

This is the sixth sculpture entered by Bill Lieb and accepted into the Sculpt Siouxland yearly exhibition over the exhibits thirteen year history. The building at the right is the Great Southern Bank.

"Connecting With Nature Through Sculpture" Exhibit by 2016 A.R.T. Artist Bill Lieb!

 
Bill Lieb has a one-man exhibit of his work at the Dickinson County Nature Center in Okoboji, Iowa.  The exhibit, titled "Connecting With Nature Through Sculpture", is on display until the end of September. It includes photos and models of six of his large site-specific public sculptures located throughout the Iowa Great Lakes Region and Spencer.
 
Also included as part of the exhibit are photos of his most recent 'Bird Series' kinetic sculptures, each over ten feet tall with three moving parts activated by the wind.  One of these sculptures, Bird Series No. 3, has been installed on the hillside just south of the Nature Center. Two other 'Bird Series' sculptures are displayed and available at Art on 16th gallery in Spirit Lake and Bijou Gallery in Okoboji.
 
Bill is a long-time member and treasurer of the Artisans Road Trip. He is a retired architect who has completed more than 200 sculptures and paintings over the past 13 years. He can be contacted at 712.330.7295. His work will be on display during the 2016 Artisans Road Trip at his home.

In this 2012 A.R.T. blog we meet veteran Artisans Road Trip artisan Bill Lieb from Spirit Lake; here Bill speaks on his latest current work!

 "Last month we finished our newest public kinetic sculpture and temporarily installed it in our driveway to test its stability and action in heavy winds. The sculpture is titled "Wind Time, when time is controlled by the wind".  It is fourteen feet tall overall and weighs over eight hundred pounds. Its galvanized, pyramid-shaped base is ten feet tall and fabricated from one-half inch thick steel plate. The top three kinetic sections are made of re-purposed stainless steel. Each of these rotates and modulates in a seemingly haphazard manner in response to changing wind conditions. This can have a mesmerizing effect on the viewer. The permanent location for  "Wind Time" will be determined at a later date.

In the distant past we cruised on a small sailboat for five years. During that time we became intimately connected to the wind and experienced it's profound influence on our daily lives. Whatever we did at that time was done in concert with the wind. For me, in an abstract way, this sculpture depicts wind controlling time. Each person viewing the sculpture will undoubtedly make his own connections. "Wind Time" is the tenth public sculpture we have constructed and displayed over the past six years."

Bill - "I am preparing new work for my scheduled one-man exhibit at the Pearson's Lakes Art Center this October 14 through December 31, 2010. Most all of my past art pieces have been in the form of pedestal-displayed interior sculpture and large exterior public sculpture."

"Recently I have been constructing large wall reliefs as part of a series I am calling my 'Cruising Series'...... inspired by a five-year sailboat adventure where Jane and I cruised in our small sailboat from San Diego, California to Ft. Meyer, Florida via the Panama Cannel. Generally the reliefs are each around 5' wide x 3'-8" high x 10" deep and weigh about four pounds. They are constructed of 1/8" thick Baltic birch plywood and are finished with acrylic paints."
