"Conversations with My Watercolor Box",  an exhibit by Glenda Drennen is now showing at the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake, IA. 

 

A native from South Dakota, Glenda Drennen was a former public school music teacher.  She then began to paint with Watercolor after leaving her teaching career; through her found passion, she has been awarded many memberships like the Iowa Watercolor Society, Watercolor Honor Society, and Iowa Artist. A number of her award winning paintings have been exhibited in corporate and private collections across the States and abroad. Drennen’s Studio - Watermark Studio, is located in LeMars, IA. 

 

Glenda's work is both colorful and whimsical. Her work is very dreamlike and attractive to the eye. Drennen uses her wonderful imagination of storytelling to create her paintings, being inspired from a variety of stories and events in her life.

The Witter Art Gallery in Storm Lake, IA is hosting an exhibit of the 2016 Artisans Road Trip during the month of June!  This year's A.R.T. membership is higher and more diverse than in many past years, and promises to be the best year yet!

The Artisans Road Trip is a year-around event.  Although well known for its weekend studio tour in the early autumn, it holds exhibits at various gallery/art center venues throughout the year.

The Witter Gallery exhibit will have an opening reception on Friday, June 10, 2016.  The reception will be from 5:30-7p.m. - the public is invited free of charge!  The exhibit will run through June 29 and the hours at the Witter Gallery are Tues-Wed 1-5p.m., Thurs 1-6p.m., Fri 1-5p.m. and Sat 10a.m.-2p.m.   The Witter Gallery is located at 609 Cayuga Street in Storm Lake, IA - in the south wing of the public library.  You can call the Gallery at (712) 732-3400 or e-mail them at wittergallery@yahoo.com for further information.

2016 A.R.T. Artists Cherie Courter and Ron Netten!

Paintings by Cherie Courter are on exhibit at the Clear Lake Arts Center from April 3 through May 14.  Featured works depict a variety of landscape compositions inspired by different landforms observed across the state of Iowa.  Cherie’s works are done in acrylic paint on canvas and emphasize such elements as color, texture, pattern, and light.  They range in size from 11”x14” to 24”x30”; are framed in oak; with most pieces available for sale.

Ron Netten and Cherie have also recently installed an  exhibition in the windows of what is known to Storm Lake residents as the “Old Montgomery Ward Building” in downtown Storm Lake.  This building did, in fact, once house a Montgomery Ward Store, but is now used for storage.  When asked by the owner about the possibility of displaying their work in the front window areas the two artists jumped at the opportunity to make their art more visible in the community.  The exhibit consists of ceramic pieces by Ron and paintings by Cherie and is located east of Vista Theatre on Lake Avenue.  Pieces are available for sale by contacting artists directly and contact information is provided at the site.  The works in the space will rotate due to the demands of other exhibitions and art fairs, but Ron and Cherie will keep pieces on display as consistently as possible.

The artists have received many favorable comments about how the exhibit “dresses up main street”.  Be sure to stop by for a look if you are in the area!

Deb Yellick Manly will open with her solo exhibit "Serendipity: Marks of Inspiration" at the Witter Gallery on September 4, 2015!

The 2015 Artisans Road Trip artist explains - "My body of work combines a love of lettering, words, and design with explorations of layered art mediums. As an artist, I find intrigue in the Interactions of line, shape, color and pattern and am captivated as I explore various combinations and interpretations.

My art pieces investigate themes of reflection and inspiration. Past and present collide with an eye to the future embodying change and new growth. Love is a constant. Some pieces may be considered traditional, whereas many of the works represented in this exhibit use letters, words, or text as a springboard for creating more abstract combinations.

Tools and materials used for my creations usually include combinations of gouache, ink, transparent watercolor, acrylics, watercolor pencils, markers, colored pencils, gel or metallic pens, markers and/or unusual accents. I often will create paste paper backgrounds for a more colorful surface to work on. I especially enjoy working with metallic gouaches, markers, and/or interference acrylics on black surfaces.

Although most of my works are two-dimensional, some pieces incorporate surface variation. I have recently begun to construct geometrical forms, incorporating unique surface design, that may be considered decorative and functional."

The 2015 Artisans Road Trip artists are celebrating A.R.T. this spring and summer with an exhibit of their works at the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake, Iowa, during the month of June.

 

Come and view works of art by the best in the region!  Better yet, come and meet the artists and get a little insight into their works!  An Artist Reception will be held at the Witter Gallery on Thursday - June 11th, and will run from 5:30-7PM!  The public is invited!

The 2014 Artisans Road Trip is exhibiting at the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake, Iowa this month!  A.R.T. participates in exhibits as a group throughout the year.  This latest exhibit opened June 5th at the Witter Gallery and runs through June 27th.

 

There will be an artist's reception at the gallery on Wednesday evening from 5-6:15 p.m.  The exhibit at the Witter is being sponsored by Paxton's Jewelry of Storm Lake. 

 

Come and meet many of the artists involved in this year's Artisans Road Trip, and get a sampling of what this year's A.R.T. has in store for NW Iowa!

"My work can be described as a translation of everyday images into an aesthetic format. The viewer’s attention is at first attracted to images of common subjects from nature…leaves, flowers, seed pods, cocoons…but quickly moves to the rhythms and textures and colors of the formal arrangements of these images."

2013 Artisans Road Trip Exhibit Kicks off Its Exhibition Season in June!

The 2013 Artisans Road Trip is kicking off its exhibition season with a showing at the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake this month of June!  The exhibit will have many artists of the 2013 A.R.T., each exhibiting 2-5 pieces of work.  What a great time to get a sneak peak of what these artists have to show this year!

The exhibit opens on June 4th and runs through June 28th.  There will be an artists reception at the Witter Gallery on Thursday June 13th, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m.

 Ron Netten is our highlighted 2012 Artisans Road Trip artist for this blog entry!  Ron has been a long time participant in A.R.T. and is located in Storm Lake, Iowa, in the "Beautiful View" section of the roadtrip. (you can click on this link for an A.R.T. map of Storm Lake)

Ron works primarily in high-fire stoneware.  He works with "food safe" material and practices, truly making his medium not just decorative and sculptural but "functional" as well!

2011 Artisans Road Trip Artist - Joleen Dentlinger

On July 6, a one woman show, entitled "Lines of Time", opened at the Clear Lake Art Center, Clear Lake.  The exhibit will close on August 18 and features both old and new pieces by A.R.T. artist Joleen Dentlinger.  Joleen states, "It was an honor to be asked to exhibit in such a fine gallery." 

Joleen continues - "Having an opportunity such as this gives me the inspiration to do more art and be prepared to exhibit all new pieces for the next time.  With working 4 days a week, my 90 year old Mother who needs assistance at times, extra curricular activities, and not to mention the every day things that take time and effort - I just find it hard to find the time to create. All of my life, I put things off until the last minute, but have found that I generally put out a better product if I do that.  If I have all sorts of time, I just dabble and generally am unhappy with the results.  Knowing that I only have days or hours puts the pressure on, but the end results are wonderful.  BUT, along with the pressure comes anxiety, tension and stress - all of which aren't the best, but the job is done and I'm happy with it!"

"For those of you unfamiliar with my art, it is very detail oriented and takes hours to create.  The larger the piece, the more hours it takes.  A judge suggested to me once that I draw larger pieces.  At the time the largest drawing was approximately 14" x 16" and the thought of going larger was rather frightening.  Since then I have numerous pieces that are 22" x 28" and the end results are quite rewarding, but with the changing economy I am reverting back to somewhat smaller pieces."

Artist's Statement:  "History and it's preservation rate very high in my heart, right behind home and family.  With my drawings I can document places and things that touched me, whether it's an old farm house, an old Chicago hotel or an intriguing landscape.  By working in pen and ink, I strive and accomplish depth, intensity, detail, "color" and texture - in just a subtle way - as simple as black and white."

The Artisan Road Trip exhibit will be moving along to the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake, Iowa this next week. You can still catch it through the rest of this week at the LeMars Iowa Art Center, but on June 2 through 30th, the Witter Gallery will be hosting the exhibition!

This is a good opportunity to catch a "glimpse" of the Artisan Road Trip before the October dates (1st - 3rd). If you're in the Storm Lake area in June, stop by the Witter and check it out!
